CALO Academic Program
Curriculum Provided by BYU Online High School Transcript Program
The BYU High School Transcript Program is designed to help prepare students for college or the job market. Students who have not functioned well in the traditional high school setting will often find the transcript program very helpful. The High School Transcript Program has two tracks:
1. Standard Program
This is a traditional high school program, which satisfies basic high school requirements for admission to college. It also prepares the student to take the ACT or SAT exams.
2. Advanced Program
This program’s requirements are more strenuous than those of the Standard Program, to better prepare the student to enter competitive colleges or universities. It also prepares the student to take the ACT or SAT exams.
Both programs allow the students to progress at their own pace. They have lots of opportunity to make up ground if they are behind in their traditional brick and mortar school. Students may apply credits earned previously from any accredited institutions toward completion of the program.
Accreditation
BYU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). BYU Independent Study's High School program is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS). Accreditation sources are reciprocal with other regional accreditation agencies, meaning that earned credits through the BYU High School Transcript Program are almost always transferable to other educational institutions.
CALO Use of Mastery Based Learning
Mastery learning does not focus purely on content, but the process of mastering it. This type of learning works best with a traditional content of focused curriculum based on well defined learning objectives organized in smaller, sequentially organized units. This strategy captures many of the elements of successful tutoring and independent functionality seen in high-end students. In a mastery learning environment, the teacher directs a variety of group based instructional techniques. The teacher also provides frequent and specific feedback as well as correcting mistakes students make along their learning path.
